.Just a little more smart-aleck commentary on the topic of @vinegrapes #tablegrapes #vinegrapes ...In the photo (unfortunately a bit blurry 🌶) ☺️, you can see damage caused by the #grapeberrymoth. This moth normally has two generations per year, but due to climate change, there are now even third generations... The first generation is active just before flowering; here, the caterpillar is called the #hayworm (during hay harvest season), while the second generation is called the #sourworm. ...The #hayworm nibbles on the #clusters of the vine, which can significantly reduce yields 🙄; the #sourworm burrows into the berries just before they ripen and feasts on the (sour) pulp. However, the name “Sauerwurm” comes from the fact that the infested berries rot and infect the other berries—causing #sour rot, #botrytis (as opposed to #noble rot, also #botrytis). Sour rot can destroy entire harvests, since sour-rotten grapes are unsuitable for winemaking... Around the infested berries, you’ll usually also find a web spun by the worm. In viticulture, biotechnological methods—specifically #pheromone-based confusion techniques—are now almost exclusively used for control... This works as follows: Dispensers that release the pheromone of the female grape berry moth are hung up. In the vineyard, every spot essentially smells like a female. ☺️ ...Now the males come flying in, all in “mating frenzy,” thinking: Wow, it smells delicious here 🤩...Well, the poor little creatures can’t find the females—the scent of the “ladies” is simply everywhere...🤷...so it’s a simple way to cut back on insecticides... ...By the way, this method is called “confusion,” poor guys...😅
