The plant genus Hosta (bot. Hosta) belongs to the subfamily of the agave family (bot. Agavoideae) of the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). Around 50 species with well over 4,000 different varieties are known. Because of the rounded shape of its leaves, the Hosta genus is also popularly known as the heart-leaved lily or heart lily. Hosta takes its botanical name from the Austrian botanist Nicolaus Thomas Host (1761 to 1834). The genus owes its German name to the German pharmacist and botanist Heinrich Christian Funck (1771-1839). The species of the Hosta genus impress with the abundance of their appearance. In 2009, the Bund Deutscher Staudengärtner (Association of German Perennial Gardeners) named the plant genus Perennial of the Year. With their different shapes, the ornamental foliage perennials of this genus bring excitement to any border. This makes the plants popular with gardeners. The variety of funkia makes them a great accompaniment to ferns, grasses and perennials. Leaf Plants from the funkia genus are characterized by their decorative, basal leaves. These are arranged in a spiral and have long leaf stalks. The foliage is broad and heart-shaped. Depending on the species or variety, it is lanceolate, smooth or wavy, thin or thick, small or large. The leaves range in size from tiny, about the size of a thumbnail, to very large. The vase-shaped leaf clusters of the funkia 'Krossa Regal' are impressive. The leaves of 'Big Daddy' are strong and thick. The species of the Hosta genus surprise with their numerous color variations. The spectrum ranges from simple green to strong yellow to a bluish overlay. The leaves of the funkie 'Royal Standard', for example, are apple green, Hosta venusta 'Gold Drop' has golden foliage and the foliage of Hosta tardiana 'Halcyon' is steel blue. There are also species with yellow or white variegated leaves. These have foliage with a white or yellow center in an irregular shape. Other species present their leaves with white edges. Flowering Hosta species bloom from June to September, depending on the variety. Clusters of flowers sit on long stems. Some of the bell-shaped flowers are even fragrant. The variety of color shades ranges from light to dark purple. There are also white varieties of this plant species. Growth All species in the funkia genus grow vigorously and persistently. They are herbaceous plants. They form horizontal rhizomes, which are often large and short-branched. Some Hosta species produce runners.
