The filamentous palm lily (Yucca filamentosa) is also known as garden yucca, Ferald's yucca or narrow leaf yucca. It is one of the best-known members of the large genus of palm lilies (Yucca). Despite their name, palm lilies are not related to the lily family (Liliaceae) or palms (Palmae). In fact, palm lilies belong botanically to the agave family (Agavoideae), a subfamily of the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The pinnate palm lily originally comes from the eastern regions of North America near the Atlantic. In hybrid form, however, the garden yucca has now also found its way into Europe. In contrast to the giant palm lily (Yucca elephantipes), which is often used as a houseplant, the garden yucca does not have a stem, but forms dense, upright clumps from its creeping, fleshy rhizomes. It grows up to 80 centimetres tall and about as wide. Yucca is a winter-green plant and is therefore also present in the garden during the cold season. Its exotic appearance makes Yucca filamentosa a striking feature in the garden. The garden yucca forms tall, gray-green tufts of foliage. These consist of numerous, up to 60 centimeters long and three centimeters wide, pointed, whole-margined leaves. The fibers protruding from the leaf edges give the filamentous palm lily its name. The leaves of the palm lily in their constant green form the base for the plant's spectacular flowers. From June onwards, it pushes its branched 150 to 200-centimeter-high inflorescences upwards from the yucca's leaf scales. A large number of bright white flowers with six-centimeter, whitish bell-shaped blossoms open on them. The flowering of the palm lily lasts until August or September and provides a rich food supply for insects. However, you need to be patient to enjoy this spectacle. Yucca flowers usually begin to bloom a few years or decades before they bloom for the first time. The Elegantissima palm lily belongs to the yucca genus, all of whose species are evergreen shrubs and woody plants. The Elegantissima palm lily consists of imposing rosettes of narrow, long pointed gray-green leaves that appear as tufts. Companions such as perennial lobelia (Lobelia), lavender, stonecrop (Sedum) or woolly cistus (Stachys byzantina) cut a fine figure around the palm lily.
