Peaches are stone fruits and grow on trees that are usually between 4 and 6 meters high. The fruit is round to slightly oval and is covered by a velvety skin. The flesh can be white, yellow or red, depending on the variety. Peaches thrive in temperate to warm climates and prefer a sunny location. They need to be cold in winter for optimum fruiting. The peach originally comes from China, from where it was brought to Europe along the Silk Road.
For sowing, the seeds must be stratified, which means that your seeds need a cold phase for successful germination (at 1 - 5 °C/34-41 °F for 6 - 8 weeks). The germination of peach seeds is usually irregular and can take several weeks to months. Trees from seed also take considerably longer to bear their first fruit (5 - 7 years). Grafted trees, on the other hand, produce their first crop after just 2 - 4 years.
