Description

The new jostaberry or Confi®Beere Jodeli® only grows to a height of approx. 150 cm in 5 years, which means it grows very compactly compared to the old jostas. Confi®Beere Jodeli® is medium-early ripening (early to mid-July), forms very large berries of up to almost 2 cm in size on compact clusters (3-5 berries per cluster). Of our new Confi® berries, Jodeli® is the sweetest variety and therefore the best choice for fresh consumption and use in fresh desserts. Like all jostaberries, Jodeli® is also perfect for use in juices and smoothies or for jams, where the high pectin content and fructose make preserving easier

Growing tips

Thrives very well in heavy garden soil in partial shade. A sheltered location can provide better protection from late frosts if the fruit sets early. In the fall, the purchased shrub is planted as deep in the soil as it was in the pot. The distance in the row should ideally be between 2.5-3 m. Tying the shrub can protect it from wind damage. Mulching can keep the moisture in the soil better and protect against weeds. Can be fertilized a little in spring and autumn. Is not pruned annually, but only thinned out from time to time. If pruned, it is best done after the harvest. Can be propagated by cuttings or suckers. Only needs to be watered on hot days. Avoid waterlogging. Pruning the Confi®Jodeli® berry Despite its more compact growth, the modern jostaberry Confi® Jodeli® has retained an important characteristic of the older jostaberry varieties: It also fruits on older, 3-year-old and even older wood. Even the smallest stimulus, e.g. light topping of the long shoots, is enough to cause a large number of light fruiting and side shoots to form, resulting in the continuous formation of new fruiting wood. We therefore recommend the following pruning measures: Generally prune less than blackcurrants, gooseberries and also redcurrants, which only bear well on young wood. Confi® berries are forgiving if they are not pruned for 2-3 years. The growth should be as dense as possible, and it is also important to protect the fruit ripening in June from sunburn. New long, unbranched shoots are pinched slightly (for the sake of simplicity, usually around last year's growth) in order to obtain more lateral wood. From the 3rd or 4th year of growth, 1-2 older, already somewhat worn branches are pruned away each year; if it is apparent that few or no shoots are emerging from the base, the old main branch is pruned back to approx. 30-40 cm in order to obtain strong new base shoots. In the case of espalier training, the lateral fruiting wood is only removed to stubs after 2-3 years in order to obtain new fruiting wood.
