This beautiful wild plant, also known as blue lily, is found on the Scottish coasts and especially on the Shetland Islands as a typical beach weed. The low oyster plant has fleshy leaves with a fine taste. Herb expert Rühlemann compares its aroma to oysters, anchovies, mushrooms and borage. The perennial plant initially blooms reddish and changes its flower color to light blue in early summer. It can be planted very well in rock gardens as it does not make any particular demands on its substrate.
Non hybrid
Frostproof
Cold germinator, optimal approx. 5 degrees. Seeds can be stratified in the refrigerator. Sowing outdoors possible. As very popular with snails, pre-growing outdoors in a pot is recommended. Cover seeds only thinly with soil, as light germinators. Loves sunny locations and fresh, well-drained, slightly sandy soil. Can also cope with drier soils, e.g. on stone. Fertilize occasionally with table salt.
