Falls under the category of tree, stem or stock cabbage. Grows up to 1.80m high. The leaves are harvested and prepared like cabbage. In Portugal, Couve Galega is used for the famous Caldo Verde, among other things. Like all cabbages, this variety is also popular with the cabbage white butterfly. However, covering it with netting is rather difficult due to its height. The plant tolerates light frost. It goes into flower in the 2nd year and seeds can therefore be obtained.
Non hybrid
Frostproof
In Portugal, this cabbage can be found in almost every garden. From our own experience, cabbage thrives in light, sandy soil as well as in heavy, clayey soil (in northern Germany). In windy regions, heavy soil is recommended. Like all cabbages, this is a heavy feeder and is popular with cabbage white butterflies. The caterpillars must be collected unless a high protective net is used. The plant can be harvested again and again. To do this, always harvest the lowest leaves (the plant then also becomes a 'tree'). As a rule, 2-3 leaves are sufficient for each dish (e.g. stew or soup).
