Carrot 'Oxheart' (also Guérande) belongs to the old vegetable varieties (1884, France) and is called an archetype of orange carrots. Medium late, light orange, up to 15 cm long (usually shorter) and occasionally even up to 10 cm thick beets with rather broad, short, pointed beet body and strong foliage (needs more space). The aroma of oxheart carrot is excellent, with a juicy and sweet taste. Even large specimens do not become woody. Suitability for cultivation in heavier soils. Both as a summer and storage carrot, fresh and for juicing. Sometimes described as a late storage variety with a relatively long development period, not to be sown outdoors before June. Sometimes described as very early, fast-growing, also called baby carrot. If necessary, consider breeding as an early or late variety.
Non hybrid
Frostproof
Sowing from January in cold frames and from March in the open field. Germination temperature from +3°C. Germination time approx. 21-27 days. Keep moist during the germination period. Recommendation: mark with radish seeds or with dill seeds. Harvesting the earlier ripening radishes will automatically thin out the rows. Handles very diverse soils. Use only mature compost for fertilizing. Often requires supplemental irrigation during hot summer months. Weeding is essential when young, as tender plantlets are quickly overgrown by weeds. For good results, the soil should be loosened regularly. Especially after heavy rain, when it tends to silt. Development period 80 - 95 days.
