Winter radish "Astor" (Raphanus sativus var. Major) is an early (summer) variety suitable for direct consumption in salads. This cultivar develops long (35 - 40 cm), white, cylindrical roots, which consist of the juicy and tender in taste flesh. It is a vegetable rich in vitamins and minerals, which is characterized by a somewhat spicy taste. The roots of winter radish contain iron, potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium, as well as vitamins C, B1 and B2. In them also occur the sulfur-rich essential oils and phytoncides. The roots of winter radish are used to produce an antibacterial sap, which also has other healing effects. It is used for coughs and colds, but also finds its place in the therapies of gallbladder and stomach disorders. Edible are also leaves of this plant, which contain carotene, folic acid and even more vitamin C than the roots. They are eaten in salads in the Far East cuisine. Winter radish "Astor" is grown from direct sowing. The seeds are sown at 30 x 15 cm intervals, 2 cm deep, from March to mid-May for the spring crop and from mid-July to mid-August for the fall crop. Winter radish gives the richest yield on the light, humus, fertile and moderately moist soils. It requires a sunny location. Winter radish "Astor" is harvested from May to July (spring sowing) and from September to October (summer sowing). The package contains 5 g of seeds of radish "Astor", as well as the expiration date of the seed and growing tips. Use: direct raw consumption; medicinal plant. Harvest time: May - July or September - October Habitat: Sunny; light, humus, fertile, moderately moist soil.
