Description

The 'Striped Roman' tomato variety was bred by John Swenson, a member of the Seed Savers Exchange. This association works in the USA to preserve old crop varieties, mainly vegetables. The 'Striped Roman' is the result of a cross between the two tomato varieties 'Antique Roman' and 'Banana Legs'. It was launched on the market in 1999 and has been a popular variety among amateur gardeners worldwide ever since. Taste and characteristics of the tomato The plants of 'Striped Roman' are extremely vigorous and can grow up to 2.5 m tall. The elongated tomato plants produce many elongated bottle tomatoes, which grow to an average length of 10 to 12 cm and can reach a weight of up to 200 g. When ripe, the tomatoes change color. When ripe, the striped fruits turn deep red and orange. Striped Roman' is a medium-early variety. The firm tomato fruits have a lot of flesh and only a few seeds. 'Striped Romans' taste fruity, sweet and spicy and have a strong tomato aroma. (From Plantura.garden).

Growing tips

Striped Roman' prefers a warm, sunny spot in a greenhouse or sheltered outdoor area, but can also be grown in a container. To do this, dig a deep hole and place the young plant in it so that about half the plant is still sticking out. All shoots that would now be under the soil are removed. For cultivation as a potted tomato, you should choose a container with a capacity of at least 20 liters and fill it with a nutrient-rich potting soil. Our peat-free Plantura Organic Tomato & Vegetable Soil is suitable for plants in pots, but also for improving heavy or poor soil in beds and greenhouses. Tomato plants in pots are also placed deep in the soil and any leaves attached to the base of the stem are removed. Now fill the soil back into the planting hole or pot and lightly press the substrate around the plant. Then water thoroughly. The pot used should have holes through which the water can drain. Ideally, you should fill the bottom of the pot with expanded clay or clay shards to ensure good drainage and place the pot in a saucer. (Further information at Plantura.garden).
