Chives taste spicy with a slightly pungent flavor. It bears beautiful purple, edible flowers that are particularly loved by bees. Chives repel many pests with their pungent smell and are therefore very popular in the garden in mixed cultivation with other plants. If you want to harvest chives primarily for eating, you should remove the flower stalks regularly. The flowers can also be eaten. It has a beneficial effect on the digestive system, stimulates the appetite and supports the metabolism in fatty dishes. Chives can also be frozen in small pieces.
Non hybrid
Frostproof
Germination after 10-26 days at 10-15°C. In the bed, chives prefer moist, calcareous and humus-rich soil. Chives are hardy and sprout again the following spring. They are harvested from spring until frost. Always keep the seeds and the plant well moist. The herb needs a good supply of water, especially on hot summer days, otherwise the stalks will become sharp and strawy. Regularly remove weeds from the clump, as even fully grown chives are sensitive to them. Harvest the fresh stalks generously, as regular pruning is the only way to keep the clump vigorous and growing. If sowing early (from April) and in winter, cover with fleece if necessary. Do not plant out until mid-May.
