Elsholtzia cristata A unique aromatic herb, called Kinh Gioi in Vietnam. The leaves taste lemony and spicy, exotic but very pleasant. Young leaves are added to fish dishes, chicken dishes, spring rolls and salads made from cucumber or leafy vegetables. They are not used sparingly, but at least a whole handful of herb is added. Freshly brewed tea made from the leaves also tastes very good. When harvesting, whole shoots are cut off so that they branch out better. The leaves are serrated, older leaves have a red coating on the underside. It is a typical labiate plant with purple flowers on long panicles. The plants grow quickly in a sunny, warm location outdoors. Although the plants are perennials, it is easiest to treat them as annuals.
