The lotus flowers (Nelumbo), also known as lotus or lotus, are the only genus in the lotus family (Nelumbonaceae). Of the only two species, one is native to the New World and the other to Asia and northern Australia. Both species and their hybrids are used as ornamental plants. Their roots provide food. Both species are perennial, herbaceous aquatic plants with large 14-30 cm white to pink or yellow flowers. The floating leaves are water-repellent (lotus effect). Lotus is only partially hardy in our region. However, it can survive mild winters in sufficiently deep water.
Non hybrid
Lotus is very heat-loving. If it is not planted in a sunny enough position, it will not flower. In areas with cold winters, it can also be cultivated in a tub, which can be brought inside in winter
