The Abyssinian cabbage Gomenzer is a fast-growing leafy cabbage from North Africa with green to purple iridescent leaves. It is used as a nutty, cabbage-like salad garnish or together with the young shoots for steaming. The taste is similar to broccoli. The low-maintenance cabbage grows in balcony boxes, pots and tubs and is a novelty in Germany. Representatives of the species Brassica carinata were cultivated in Ethiopia as early as the 4th century and traditionally eaten as a vegetable, and the seeds were used to make a type of mustard or for oil production. Gomenzer is not hardy. Growing it as an after crop in a cold greenhouse over the winter months can be interesting.
