Description

Who among garden lovers wouldn't want a flower bed that blooms all summer long? A mixture of annual summer flowers and perennials is particularly suitable for this. The spiked coneflower (bot. Liatris spicata) is a real showpiece among summer-flowering perennials and a popular cut flower. A bouquet of yellow coneflowers and the purple blossoms of the liatris spicata brings summer into the room. The purple to pink inflorescences are not found in every garden, but when they are, they are a real eye-catcher! A warm, sunny spot is just right for Liatris spicata, which needs watering in dry weather and a well-drained soil that does not allow moisture to build up. It can tolerate a little drought in summer, but not compacted soil. Heavy soil can be loosened with a little compost and sand, as the roots rot when waterlogged. It does not need winter protection, and diseases and pests rarely occur. Depending on the height of the plants, the taller species should be planted about 25 centimetres apart and the lower species at least 15 centimetres apart. Beautiful combinations can be achieved by planting with stonecrop, coneflower, grasses and bellflowers.
