Elaeagnus species are mostly frost-hardy and robust, evergreen or deciduous shrubs or small trees that usually grow independently upright or sometimes climbing. Some species have thorns. The leaves, the bark of young twigs and the flower and flower buds have silvery or white to brown scales (scales), similar to the related sea buckthorn. The alternate leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The simple leaf blade usually has a full margin. The flowers are arranged singly or in groups in the leaf axils. The hermaphrodite flowers with a simple perianth are usually four-petaled, petals are missing. The four white or yellow petaloid sepals are attached to a tubular, slender calyx. The four stamens are fused with the calyx tube. The ovary is median, the style is straight, the stigma is elongated to capitate. There is usually a discus. Spherical to elongated, smooth to hairy pseudo-fruits (drupes or achenes in the fleshy hypanthium) are formed; rarely (Elaeagnus mollis) they are winged. The mostly eight-ribbed seed (stone seed) has a large embryo.
