The giant arborvitae is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub with a conical crown. It is native to North America. It is only suitable for larger gardens as its branches often graze the ground. Scaly, fresh green leaves with a strong fragrance, even without rubbing, and the scent is reminiscent of apple or pineapple. Male flowers are very small, inconspicuous and the female flowers are pale yellow, egg-shaped and turn brown in the fall. Forms reddish-brown seeds. Very adaptable shrub for moist, loamy soils and sunny to semi-shady locations. Used as a privacy screen in parks.
