The Japanese palm fern (Cycas revoluta), also known as the Japanese sago palm fern, is native to Japan and Southeast Asia. Botanically, it belongs to the genus of sago palm ferns (Cycas) within the Cycadaceae family. Palm ferns, which are also known as living fossils, are among the oldest plants in the world and grow relatively slowly. However, they can become very old and develop into impressive ornaments with increasing age. Cycas revoluta has the greatest horticultural significance: in the Mediterranean region, the species is often planted in gardens and parks; in our latitudes, the Japanese palm fern can be cultivated wonderfully as a houseplant or container plant. Cycas revoluta grows quite slowly in the first few years, only later does the short, thick and cylindrical trunk develop. A new crown of leaves grows from the trunk approximately every one to two years. Although palm ferns are visually reminiscent of palm trees, they are closer to ferns in other respects. In its natural habitat, the Japanese sago palm fern usually grows to a height of around three meters, although it can also reach a height of two meters in containers.
