Description

This strong-growing and very rich-flowering small crocus is a striking early beauty! The flowers of 'Orange Monarch', which shine in a strong, dark orange, are effectively bronze to golden-brown on the outside; it was probably named after the North American monarch butterfly because of this play of colors. With its very early flowering, this cheerful fellow usually opens the crocus round dance as soon as the winter sun becomes a little stronger and wakes it up. 'Orange Monarch' is robust, flowers for a particularly long time and, like all crocuses rich in pollen and nectar, is eagerly visited by bumblebees and bees despite its very early flowering time. In well-drained, sunny to sunny locations, it will happily run wild. But of course it can also be grown in pots, as the beautiful pattern of its flowers is particularly attractive when viewed up close. The original form of Crocus balansae comes from western Turkey and was named after the French botanist Benjamin Balansa (1825-1891), who was an expert on Turkey thanks to his many botanical journeys.
