The brown-stemmed striped fern gives its name to the striped fern family (Aspleniaceae). It is found in the wild worldwide in many preferably temperate to cooler regions on rocks, walls and in forests on moist soil. The fern has a short but strong rhizome covered with scales, from which tufts of filigree fronds 20 to 80 centimetres high appear above ground. It gets its name from the shiny black to brown central rib of the fronds, which is surrounded by evergreen leaves that taper towards the tip. The elongated leaflets are yellow-green to dark green and rounded; individual fronds reach a length of up to 80 centimeters, but usually remain significantly smaller at 8-20 centimeters. The spores are located under small white to oval indusia on the underside of the leaves; each of these contains 4-8 individual obliquely arranged sori, which are 1-4 millimeters long.
