The soft shield fern belongs to the worm fern family (Dryopteridaceae); it can be found growing wild in large parts of Europe up to the Caucasus, in North Africa and on the Macaronesian islands in the Atlantic. It prefers fern-rich beech and beech-fir forests, shaded rocky slopes, walls and damp stream banks. The plants grow up to one meter high; underground it survives the winter with a strong rhizome, from which new light green and overhanging fronds appear every year. These are double or triple pinnate, triangular-lanceolate in outline with a slightly narrowed base and long stalked, the leaflets are soft-bristled. In warm winters at least some of the fronds remain, most of them die off and remain attached to the rhizome. On the spindles of the fronds, the dense brown, silvery reflective spore capsules are conspicuous; on the underside there are two rows of small sori covered by a delicate veil and producing light yellow spores.
