Description

The hart's tongue fern is a garden event. Its smooth, shiny, tongue-shaped leaf fronds clearly distinguish it from all its feathery fern relatives. This makes the hart's tongue something special! Botanists classify (bot.) Phyllitis scolopendrium in the striped fern family. What plant lovers love about this decorative fern beauty is its lush green color. It enhances every shady corner of the garden and gives it a fairytale aura. In the wild, the hart's tongue fern has been found in North America, Europe and the Caucasus since time immemorial. In Germany, it can still be found in some areas of the Swabian Alb, the Rhenish Slate Mountains and the foothills of the Alps. The hart's tongue is strictly protected under the Federal Species Protection Ordinance. In its cultivated form, the hart's tongue fern makes a beautiful contrasting plant in the herbaceous border. For example, it forms a wonderful garden alliance with the towering candles of a foxglove. It is the perfect companion for funkia, show leaf, silver candle or fairy flower. The hart's tongue is perfect as an underplanting and makes a wonderfully aesthetic eye-catcher as a solitary plant. With its shiny, smooth fronds, the perennial hart's tongue fern is the highlight among ferns! The name of the plant comes from the tongue-shaped form of the fronds. The tapered fronds are undivided and have entire edges. In the wild, they can grow up to 50 cm long. The fronds spread out in a sprawling manner and later hang in arching clusters above the rhizome. The hart's tongue fern is evergreen. This is an attractive design feature for garden lovers, as the fern fronds give the winter garden a pleasant structure. The fern is robust and uncomplicated, thanks to its garden-friendliness and the old, dry fronds. The fronds, which grow in late spring, are a fresh light green that stays rich green and feathery for a long time. Spores form on their underside and ripen between July and September.
