The red veil fern is a gem in the shade garden! The plant originally comes from China. There it can be found in damp forests. This fern has been cultivated since 1891 and enriches gardens and parks worldwide. Its special feature is its dark green fronds, which initially have a reddish glow. The fresh shoots are bright copper-red and add color to the garden. They take on a dark green color over the course of the year. The botanical name of this ornamental foliage plant is Dryopteris erythrosora. This perennial is suitable for sunny or semi-shady spots. It also beautifies difficult garden hedges, such as areas next to hedges or under larger trees. Even if this plant does not bear flowers, it brings color to its location with its fronds and luminosity. The red veil fern has an arching, wide-spreading habit and is frost-hardy. Like all ferns, the red veil fern does not like direct sunlight. It feels at home in a sunny or semi-shady location. Because the fern only grows between 50 and 75 cm tall, it is ideal for decorating open areas of the garden bed. As it grows to a dwarf height of up to 60 cm, make sure to plant the fern out in spring, not just with the new spring flowers, perennials or shrubs. Dryopteris erythrosora radiates lightness and elegance and should not be missing in any shade garden.
