The European ostrich fern is a native fern that gets its name from its fronds, which resemble ostrich feathers. Its botanical name is Matteuccia struthiopteris. The fronds, which look very impressive, are arranged in a funnel shape. The leaves are double-pinnate and grow upright. This type of fern grows to around 80 centimeters to one meter tall. They are not only attractive to look at because of their size, but also have the advantage that they grow very quickly. It is typical of these ferns that the tips point slightly outwards. This fern plant also grows in the wild, but is a protected species. Spotted ferns and ostrich ferns are not the same thing and should not be confused. Spotted ferns have entire or toothed leaves and are not feathery like Matteuccia struthiopteris.
