Description

A harbinger of spring that finds its place in every rock garden. The moss saxifrage 'Purpurmantel' impresses with its moss-like growth and its flowers. This exuberant profusion of small, densely packed, cupped flowers is breathtaking. Blooming in spring, it attracts everyone's attention with its purple-red flower color. A must for every perennial lover. Saxifraga x arendsii 'Purpurmantel' forms a dense, moss-like carpet. The small, rounded, toothed leaves grow in a cushion-like pattern in a rich grass green and appear in slightly spherical rosettes of around two centimeters in diameter. In its flowering period from April to May, this plant produces leafless, multi-flowered stems with enchanting, small, cupped flowers. These are a vibrant purple-red. The petals of the flower are egg-shaped and around six millimeters long. The moss saxifrage 'Purpurmantel' is a flat-growing plant with a maximum height of five centimeters. It only reaches a height of 10 - 15 centimeters during the flowering season. This makes Saxifraga x arendsii 'Purpurmantel' an excellent ground cover plant for rock gardens, paths, steps and borders. It grows extraordinarily lush there. The plant is also frost-hardy and does not require any major protective measures for overwintering. As the rosette-shaped foliage does not die back after flowering, the evergreen plant also looks great in winter. The moss saxifrage 'Purpurmantel' is propagated by dividing the existing stock in spring or fall. Regular division and replanting is recommended in order to prevent the plant from becoming bare and falling apart. The perennial prefers well-drained soil. An undemanding, slightly sandy soil is suitable for this and is perfect for bordering beds, which is why Saxifraga x arendsii 'Purpurmantel' can be planted in small groups of up to three plants. The planting distance here is 20 - 25 centimetres and the ideal location should not be too hot and sunny, so the location and temperatures should be chosen carefully. It loves fresh rock gardens, preferably calcareous, but the soil should by no means be too long. Under no circumstances should the perennial plant be allowed to grow in dry conditions. The faded stems should only be cut back in spring, as the seed heads can provide additional support. The moss saxifrage 'Purpurmantel' is an easy-care plant that thrives magnificently with the right location and a little attention. Good luck with your cultivation!
