Description

Orostachys spinosa has a wide distribution area in the dry mountainous regions of Central Asia. Due to the large distribution area, there are many distinctly different types that differ in the size and color of the rosettes. This species, which is mostly found on limestone, not only looks very similar to a Sempervivum, but also has the same cultivation requirements. As with Sempervivum, the individual rosettes are monocarpic and die back after flowering. The small yellowish flowers develop from June to July on a cylindrical, approx. 20 cm high inflorescence which dies back after flowering and can later be removed along with the entire rosette. The succulent leaves form a dense rosette and usually have a conspicuous white spiny tip. The color of the leaf rosettes ranges from green to steel blue to red and orange. The size of the rosettes can also vary greatly.
