Description

The bushy, soft ears of corn, which seem to float on the long stalks, create an enchanting atmosphere. When morning frost or fine raindrops settle on them, the effect is almost magical. In the background and underneath, even the slender and delicate leaves are shaken by the sight of the flowers. It is not uncommon to get goosebumps when you look at the 'Hameln' lamp-cleaning grass. In addition to its appearance, its character is just as impressive: this lamp-cleaning grass flowers extremely early, with an overwhelming abundance and does not demand anything in return for its attractive appearance. Care requirements, compromises and difficulties in the choice of location are therefore foreign words for this specimen.

Growing tips

It is thanks to the German breeder Junge that this elegant beauty was created in 1964 and successfully introduced to the market. Since then, the cultivation of the plant has proven so successful that it can now be found in many gardens and parks. As a member of the sweet grass family, the 'Hamelin' lamp grass, whose botanical name is Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hamelin', impresses with its excellent winter hardiness. Compared to many other exotic sweet grasses, it can even withstand temperatures as low as -20 °C without losing any of its health and vitality. Each spring, the long stalks form anew, even after a harsh winter. It is perennial, persistent and creates a wonderful contrast to flowering perennials.
