It is a weak and bizarrely growing shrub or small tree with leathery, dark green foliage. Its large white flowers appear late, from May to June. The fruits are significantly larger than those of wild plants. They are golden brown, round, rough with a very large open calyx and long sepals. The flesh is yellowish green and slightly pink towards the core. Similar to sloes, the fruit needs to be frozen to become soft and sweet. Before that, they have a tart to bitter taste. They are best processed into juice, jelly, liqueur and wine.
Non hybrid
Frostproof
The medlar is very undemanding and even grows on poor, gravelly ground. However, it thrives best in nutrient-rich, warm and somewhat calcareous soil that is not too dry but never wet. It prefers sunny spots, but also tolerates semi-shady areas.
