The lima bean originates from Guatemala, Mexico and Peru. It is very heat-loving and grows best in Central Europe as a pot plant in a sunny location. Lima beans have a mild flavor and are well suited for stew dishes. In tropical and subtropical climates, lima beans grow perennially. However, in our country they are cultivated only as annuals, as they do not tolerate frost. Since this type of bean is much more heat-loving than our garden bean, early precultivation indoors is absolutely recommended so that it can come to maturity at all - or even the complete cultivation in the greenhouse. As an ornamental plant for the garden, balcony and terrace, lima beans are also very decorative with their numerous delicate flowers in clusters. Later, the ripe seeds are just as pretty and very colorful. Depending on the variety, they come in white, yellow, red purple and black, solid color to radiating pattern. Except for the white-skinned beans, all others contain the toxic prussic acid glycoside linamarin. It is therefore essential to boil the beans before eating them and pour away the cooking water, then they are safe to eat. Sowing in the open field after the ice-hallows in the middle of May to the beginning of July. Sowing depth: 2-4 cm. In case of earthing-up sowing 6-8 grains per stalk. For row sowing, plant 40-50 cm apart in the row and 100-120 cm apart in the row. Likes a lot of sun. Does not tolerate wet soils. Mound at about 15 cm plant height for better stability. Pole beans need a pole or something else to climb up.
