Kai-lan is a plant that prefers warm to temperate climates and has the greatest heat resistance of all cabbage varieties. Kai-lan seeds and seedlings thrive best at 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. Temperatures above 30 and below 15 degrees Celsius prevent the germination and growth of seeds and seedlings. Kai-lan usually grows at a temperature of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Its growth decreases at a temperature below 20 degrees Celsius and slows down considerably when it is lower than 15 degrees Celsius. The plant likes large day/night temperature differences and tolerates normal to sandy soil with 80 to 90 % soil moisture. However, it is not resistant to drought. Excessive irrigation and accumulation of water in the fields has a negative effect on the plant
